Business Cards in the Digital Age

By: Jim Kroswell

A business card is still important in this day and age of technology because it offers a tangible connection between your company and another live person. Also, it is still a part of an overall marketing strategy. You never know what future client may come from handing out a small piece of thin cardboard paper. The artistocracy of England was using business cards since the 1400's, but the regular guy wasn't using business cards until the 1600's. In other words, they have been a part of business marketing for well over 600 years of human history.

A business card normally has your name, your company name, your email address, your company website, and a logo for your business. You may also add a small description of what it is you do.

Why are business cards still useful even though we are all such online creatures? First off, it is more personal and it is a solid object that a human being can put in their wallet and be able to contact you later through. This is helpful, especially if you are offering some kind of service, such as a mechanic or mobile detailer. Also, have you ever gone into a restaurant or a Panera and seen a collection of cards hanging on the wall or in a little holder next to the cash register? Well, you can't get your card in those spots unless you have one. And, even if your local restaurant doesn't have a business card collection, you can pull up your big boy pants and go in there to the manager and ask them if you can put your card, along with a little holder you grab at the local dollar store, next to the cash register. They might just say yes.

What is one of the new things that cards have on them these days? Well, websites have now long been a staple of business cards, but a new thing that business cards are starting to have is a QR code. These can be helpful because this way you can track who is getting to your website through the card.

What are some websites that offer business card deals?

Vistaprint offers 50 business cards for 13 bucks. They also will put the QR code on the business card so that people can be directed to your online presence without having to type in your website. 46 dollars will get you 1000 cards. It is not a large investment which could benefit your company. Just the physical act of creating the card, and having it on your person, may give your a sense of pride in your business which may carry you further than you realize. Foil accents and square cards are some of the different options that Vistaprint offers. Also, they have over 800 five star reviews. So, it seems people are pretty happy with their service. However, the star system seems to be one they implemented themselves on their website, so not sure how much stock you can take in that. Speaking of stock, they offer 12 different kinds of card stock. So, there are definitely some options to look into here.

What are Digital Business Cards?

One example is dotcards.net, which allows you to buy a card for twenty bucks. You buy the card, fill out the profile, and then when you meet someone, they can use their phone, point it at your dot card, and they will get all of the information on your profile. Their website says that the other party does not have to have the dot card themselves, but their phone will still get all of your infomation. When you type in digital cards, this one comes up right away, so it seems like it is quite popular. If your business includes traveling to trade shows, then this would seem to be invaluable.

One interesting thing in this time is that you can have a little more fun with the material you use to create your card. You could use metal as a material for your card, which not only leave a lasting impression, it will not easily be destroyed in someone's pocket or by spilled coffee.

Another upside of a business card is the ability to track where you are getting customers. You can do this through a QR code or by putting different websites on different cards. In one restaurant you could use one landing page. If you drop your card at your local doctors' offices, you can put a different website. Then you can monitor the website traffic and gauge where your card is getting the most traction.

Whatever business you have or however you decide to take up the practice of a business card, it can be a building block in the growth of your business. Remember, helping your business, even in small ways, can have exponential effects on your business's growth.

A neat tip to take with you: next time you go to dinner or lunch, leave your business card with your tip. You should probably tip a little extra, since you are mildly using it as a bribe. But, all kidding aside, the odds of someone visiting your website if they get it with their tip, are probably higher than what you would get with a hundred impressions of your google adsense ad. So, go ahead and get out at least one business card a day via your eating habits. It may also help you to widen your culinary net since you probably only want to leave one card per restaurant. Make a game of it and try to hit all of the restaurants in your city. Then, start working on the cities adjacent to your city. Building your marketing never tasted so good.
